(Engineering career opportunities) Getting Tired of Your Career? Start Something on the Side-00-1181
By Pat Patrickson
Even those who chose their careers carefully may eventually feel like a change. It may be because of changes in the industry that you do not feel comfortable with, or it may be that your expectations have changed. Regardless of the reason, you may have a difficult choice to make: Do you carry on and bear it, or do you make a change, risking failure?
On the one hand, playing it safe would be the sensible option. After all, many people do not even have jobs. On the other hand, the situation is likely to deteriorate, and you will probably become more and more frustrated as time goes on. Can you see yourself doing this for the rest of your working life?
There is, however, another option. And it need not entail any huge financial risk. You can start a small business on the sideline, and let it grow. It can be something so simple that it only generates a few hundred dollars a month. How small it starts off does not matter. What does matter is that you should simply keep at it. The fact that you do not need the income to live off, means that you will be able to let it grow faster than would be possible otherwise.
As you continue to work on your project, it will help you to get rid of stress, and improve your self-image in the process. This is bound to happen, since you are busy building a future for yourself. The fact that the beginnings are small and humble does not mean it cannot grow. If the business you start is not the business that eventually leads you to financial freedom, it will at least be the venture that started the journey.
There is an old saying: “Rome was not built in a day”. Keep this in mind, and remember that in most instances, a business takes a while to perform up to expectations. Consider it to be similar to planting a tree: It takes a lot of time and attention before it bears fruit. At times it may seem like it will take forever. However, you will eventually see your little business improve, and your efforts will be rewarded.
