Learning the Ropes of Department Store Jobs

By Garrett36 Pierson36

Department stores in this part of the world typically open their shops to customers at 10:00 A.M. By this time, there are already shoppers waiting by the shop doors. Some of them are raring to shop while others are bent on returning merchandise bought from a few days ago. From the perspective of department store employees, it is just as chaotic outside as it is inside the store. The phones are ringing, and the answering machines are bursting with request for return calls from frantic customers.

So what are we getting at? Department store jobs are not exactly the most relaxing ones. And the more challenging part is how to stay charming, patient and personable when the shop door opens at 10:00 A.M. despite all the stress factors hours before. As such, many department store employees would tell you that department store jobs are only for tough cookies. They are not for the faint-hearted. They are meant for those who are made of sterner stuff.

If you are planning to get a job at a department store, there are many things that you should know, so you can make your choice in a more informed manner. The first challenge that you should expect are demanding customers. While there are customers who would rather be left alone as they go through rack after rack to pick their item of choice, there are others who want an attendant to be beside them during the entire process.

A common type of this kind of customers is those who insist that they know their size, even when it is so glaring that they are two or three sizes bigger. To illustrate, a woman walks to a sales attendant with an item in hand. She asks for a size 4 but the sales attendant recommends a size 10. The woman, however, insists that she’s no bigger than 4. How to handle this kind of customer? Expert salespeople suggest allowing her to try the size 4, but getting sizes 6 to 10 anyway in case you are right and the customer is wrongwhich is almost always the case. Chances are, the customer will ask for bigger sizes until she gets to 10. Having the other sizes handy will save you several trips to the stockroom, and the crushed ego of the customer.

There is also the problem with customers who abuse the return and exchange policies of stores that you have to deal with. Some customers pay for an item, use it once, and return it to the store after it has served its purpose. There are also some who purchase a pricey item, buys a cheap imitation somewhere else, and returns the knock-off with the original tag attached to get their money back. Dealing with these types of customers requires patience, firmness and diplomacy.

Working in a department store can be naturally enjoyable for people who love being around other people and who have mastered the art of customer service. But for those who have not, it may be good to brush up on your people skills first before taking the retail plunge.

Why I Became a Clinical Laboratory Technologist

By Roberto Garabell

During my youth, I was fascinated with learning about biology and how it worked. I would just curl up on the floor with an encyclopedia and chips in my hand and enjoy reading every biology entry that I could discover. The great thing about reading the biology entries from the encyclopedia is that you never knew if the next biology entry would be about a type of life like bacteria, or a life process like photosynthesis.

Based on what I love most, most people would expect that I am a geek. Well, I am not. As a matter of fact, I belong to the varsity team of my school’s basketball team from my elementary school up to my middle school.

My family belongs to a middle class family and I was brought up well. I simply love looking in a microscope and looking at the tiny spiral like living things moving in front of my eyes and many other things involving chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests.

I always look forward to my science classes and I always raise my hand if my professor asks for a volunteer. I planned to take up medicine in my post graduate studies and be a physician, since this is my father’s dream for me, but at that time I was having the time of my life playing basketball which was my priority.

Later, I majored in biology in college and worked my way through many classes. My plan was to pursue my desire to become a physician. Unfortunately, I didn’t had the chance to make my plans turn into a reality. I was asked by my father to take over our family business, because he is sick and needs to rest. I accepted at once, but still dreamed of a career that dealt with biology.

Since I have most of my time taken up with the family business, I decided to take specialized courses to become a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, which was the most practical way which I can make my dreams come through. After some time, with a mixture of effort, patience and courage, I finished my degree and acquired the necessary certification for the job. Since I wanted to start immediately, I applied part-time in a clinic laboratory at the same time that I’m managing the small business that my family has bestowed upon me.

Even though I am very busy with the family business I am handling, my work in the laboratory compensates this with the happiness, enjoyment and knowledge that I encounter in the laboratory even if for a short period of time.

To be able to pursue this career more, I have put up a small clinical laboratory of my own. With a couple of other clinical laboratory technologists as my employees, this served as the playground of my fascinations and imaginations that I have been dreaming as a child. For some this would be a very small dream, but for me this is the best thing that I have ever done in my life.
